First Babymoon in Cornwall

Newquay | Lizards Point | Lands end

Where is it?

Cornwall is situated in the most southwest point of great Britain.

Why Cornwall?

In December it may not fancy many but I decided to go there for my babymoon because:

  1. I don’t have to fly.
  2. I enjoy long drives. You can take as many stops as you want on the way.
  3. It’s shoulder-season, so we can find better deals.
  4. I am trying to avoid crowded destinations. I am hoping that fewer people would like to go to the coastal areas for holidays in December.

Where did we stay?

We were based in Newquay for the whole week, just because it is in the middle of Cornwall, all destinations we wanted to cover in this trip are within a 1-hour drive. We rented a spacious two-bed apartment with a serene sea view, at Fistral beach in Newquay.

Day1: Long drive – Home to Newquay

We started from home in the noon and reached our destination at about 5 pm. We took many stops on the way. Our apartment was located right next to Fistral beach with great views of the Atlantic ocean from our bedroom. It was quite serene to just watch out of the window. We lied down on the bed to enjoy the view and dozed off. Later in the evening, we went to Bay Bar at Fistral beach hotel for dinner. It was just a short walk from our apartment and the food was delicious. We decided to walk for while after dinner. A good book to read and the sound of ocean waves in the background was all that I wanted to finish off the day.

Day2: Crantock beach and the Gannel estuary walk (about 7.5 km)

The best thing about a staycation is that there is no rush to do anything, you can sleep in, for as long as you want. For breakfast, we went to Morris Pasti Gover for  Meditarienian cornish pasti with a caramel latte. It was nice to walk around the town and try a local favorite.

The weather was sunny at noon. We didn’t want to miss this golden opportunity so we decided to go for a long walk. We went on Crantock and the Gannel circular walk. (https://www.iwalkcornwall.co.uk/walk/crantock_and_gannel)

Crantock beach and Poly joke beach cove are situated on both sides of the west Pentire Penninsula and they are beautiful. The Gannel is a tidal river so be careful if you decide to walk there. When we go for a walk, we carry something light and healthy with us to eat on the go. It was Pumpkin and cranberry sourdough bread sandwich with Goat cheese, walnuts, and honey. With that, we also had some dates, fresh coconut, and blackberries.

We finished our walk before sunset. After such a beautiful day, we didn’t feel like going out for dinner. One of the many perks of renting a fully furnished apartment on holidays is that you can cook whatever you like. We did some shopping on our way back and later in the evening we made spaghetti pasta with Napoletana sauce, spinach, chickpeas, and parmesan cheese. And finished our dinner with some coffee and chocolate. ( Note: Too much caffeine is not good during pregnancy, I prefer week flat-white or decaffeinated coffee).

Day 3: Roseland heritage coast and St. Anthony

It was a rainy day later today, so we decided to go for a walk and sightseeing in the morning. We drove towards Roseland heritage coast and walked around there and later we drove to the St Anthony head. There are some pretty good views from up there. Later in the day we just came back to our beautiful apartment and relaxed.

Day 4: Newquay town center

We went to Concho Lounge in Newquay town center for breakfast and I must say it was a really good experience. I had delicious buttermilk pancakes. I was happy that they don’t serve pancakes with fresh cream or ice cream with loads of maple syrup on it to give you sugar shock early in the morning. Instead, they served it with berry compote and a bit of fresh yogurt on the top. Hubby ordered his all-time favourite avocado toast and egg and he was impressed with the plating.

Rest of the day was spent in Newquay.

Day 5: Lizard point

Let me clear one thing first, there are no lizards at Lizard’s point. Neither this peninsula looks like a lizard. The name derives from the Cornish language.

This is the most southerly point of the British mainland. And about an hour’s drive from Newquay. Lizard point is famous for coastal walks, spectacular views, the iconic lighthouse, wildlife, and local art shops.

We were there in December, it may not be the best time of the year, but we had a good time up there. It was a sunny day, good visibility, and not-windy at all. We went for a walk along the coast and it was amazing.

Later we had lunch at Wavecrash cafe at Lizard point and we were not disappointed. They have really good dishes and serve them well.

Day 6: Land’s end

We finished our holiday with a trip to the Land’s end. It is the most western point in mainland Britain. Similar to the Lizard Point, the Land’s end is famous for its coastal walks and beautiful views. A short walk north from the land’s end will take you to the Sennen cove, which is famous for its beach and local cafe.

We couldn’t walk south due to strong wind, but we were informed that there are few good walks in that direction as well. We decided to spend the afternoon at Land’s end restaurant with a view and a good meal. In winter they close at 4:00 pm. So no access to facilities.

Overall, we had a great time in Cornwall and definitely, we would like to visit this place again and explore more.

Travel safe!
